Jack & Jill Competitions - Sampa City Swing

Welcome to the official page of the Sampa City Swing Jack & Jill competitions!

Jack & Jill is the most traditional and exciting competition format in West Coast Swing, designed to test your social dance skills, musicality, and adaptability.

In this format, competitors register individually as Leader or Follower.

During preliminary rounds, you will dance with multiple randomly assigned partners, to music selected on the spot by the event’s DJ. In the final round, you will dance with a single partner, also randomly assigned, for a performance evaluated by our judges.

Sampa City Swing is committed to providing a fair, fun, and welcoming competition environment for all dancer levels.

Available Categories

To ensure all participants compete with dancers of similar technical level, we offer two main Jack & Jill categories.

This category is intended for dancers beginning their competitive journey in West Coast Swing or still developing fundamental skills. It’s the perfect environment to gain floor experience, understand competition dynamics, and, above all, have fun.

Eligibility: Open to students and social dancers starting their competitive journey.

The Intermediate category targets dancers with a solid West Coast Swing foundation, mastering technical fundamentals and demonstrating good musicality and connection. A higher level of complexity and dialogue in dance is expected.

Eligibility: Open to dancers with prior competition experience or who have strong technical fundamentals. Dancers with significant results in beginner categories at other events are encouraged to register in this division.

Eligibility Rules

Sampa City Swing supports diversity and freedom of expression in dance. Hence, we adopt flexible rules that allow competitors to explore different dance roles while maintaining competitive fairness.

  1. Role Choice: Anyone, regardless of gender, may register as Leader or Follower.

  2. Competing in Multiple Roles: Competing in both categories (Beginner and Intermediate) is allowed if different roles are chosen.

- Example: If you register as Leader in the Beginner category, you may register as Follower in the Intermediate category (and vice versa). - Competing in the same role in two different categories is not allowed.

Awards

We recognize the effort and dedication of our competitors. Therefore, Sampa City Swing offers attractive prizes for finalists in both categories.

For Beginner and Intermediate categories, prizes will be distributed as follows:

  • 1st Place: Exclusive Trophy + Cash Prize

  • 2nd Place: Exclusive Trophy + Cash Prize

  • 3rd Place: Exclusive Trophy + Cash Prize

General Rules and Conduct

To ensure smooth competition proceedings, all participants must be aware of and agree to the following guidelines:

  • Dance Content: The performance is expected to be predominantly West Coast Swing. Judges will evaluate timing, teamwork, technique, and musicality.

  • Aerial Moves: Moves where the partner completely loses contact with the floor and is supported by the other (aerials) are not allowed in Jack & Jill categories and may result in disqualification. Weight-support moves with at least one foot on the floor are permitted but must be performed safely.

  • Attire: We encourage elegant and comfortable clothing that allows free movement.

  • Punctuality: Competitors must be at the staging area 30 minutes before their scheduled round. Delays may result in elimination.

  • Code of Conduct: Mutual respect is non-negotiable. Any unsportsmanlike behavior, harassment, or disrespect towards partners will result in immediate disqualification.

Prepare yourself, train hard, and come shine on the Sampa City Swing floor!
